Days of Dreams and Laughter: The Story Girl and Other Tales: The Story Girl, the Golden Road, Kilmeny of the Orchard
Published in Hardcover by Avenel (February, 1991)
Authors: Lucy Maude Montgomery and Lucy Maud Montgomery
Average review score:

A Nice Edition
This book containing The Story Girl, its sequel The Golden Road (the Disney series "Road to Avonlea" is based on these two works), and the unrelated Kilmeny of the
Orchard is a nice edition of three Lucy Maud Montgomery classics.

Copious reviews of all three works are available under their individual titles here on Amazon so I will just say that I recommend all three and this book would be an excellent gift for a young reader who enjoys fiction with a historical setting, "Anne" lovers particularly, should enjoy the two Story Girl titles.

It does seem a bit odd to group the more mature Kilmeny of the Orchard with the other two titles but there is nothing in "Kilmeny" that is unsuitable for a modern day younger reader.

A classic set in one volume
This volume is comprised of three of L. M. Montgomery's classic stories - The Story Girl, The Golden Road, and Kilmeny of the Orchard. In one way, I'm not quite sure what "Kilmeny" is doing in the set, if you wanted to keep with the "Avonlea" theme, but on the other hand, it does the other stories no harm in being there.

This book was published with the cover picture from the Disney Channel series "Avonlea". I love the volume, and am sorry to see that it is currently out of print. It would have been nice to see if they had other compliation volumes.

great book
this book is really worth reading. I loved how she described all the characters, this book was very well written. i'd like to find more books by her soon.

The Days of Henry Thoreau
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (February, 1993)
Author: Walter Harding
Average review score:

A Wonderful Life
If you like the writings of Thoreau, you will love this biography. Thoreau really comes to life and Walter Harding does a great job at aquainting us with Thoreau as if he were our neighbor or close friend. You will love all the stories of his childhood, his many excursions and his never ending desire for knowledge of nature. Also, at the end Harding dicusses Thoreaus's sexuality, which for me was a burning question throughout the book. There is no better biography out there written on Thoreau.

Good book on a brilliant man
This book looks at Thoreau's life in depth. The first few chapters try to show how Thoreaus young life shaped his older years. Always complicated both in his young and old years. This book also gives great details of Thoreaus many excursions, and the many people with whom he graced with his presence. If you in interested in Thoreau, it would be in your best interest to buy this book, it's the link between his life and his work.

An ecclectic repose of a great man.
I've alway's been in the habit of reading about the life of an author before acually reading his works and this book has covered all the bases of an incredibly intelligent man. His prose of description was in depth, and at the same time it showed views of alot of his friends in a town full of intellects. It makes you feel like you were there living Concord enjoying the scenes on Walden with thoughts from a perspective that the average person would not usually pull from any kind of methodical observation.

I would read this book again and again for a distinctive and magnanimous outlook from one the most notable Thoreau scholars.

Great book if a child misses somthing/someone.
This is a lovely counting book. It has animals and great pictures to look at. It is about a little boy who misses his freind when she is sick. He send her different thing every day of the week in hopes of making her recover faster. It also would help a child learn the days of the week. It would be nice for a child who is missing a friend or family member or some one moves away. It has lots of ideas and creative things they can do to keep them busy and also please the reciever of all those things. Very lovely book to give to a sick friend. The most adorable book.

Dear Daisy, Get Well Soon
The book Dear Daisy, Get Well Soon is a charming story. It is about Two close friends and neighbors named Daisy and Peter. Daisy gets ill with the chicken pox and cant not com out and play with him for about a week. To make her not so lonely and in hopes of helping her get better faster he sends diffrent thigns to her eachday. This book also is a counting book, and helps them learn the days of the week. For example on monday he sends her a get well card and sends it over ot her house by giving it to an elephant. There are also lots of wonderful drawings and visuals for them to see.

Dear Daisy, Get Well Soon
My 18-month-old, Sara Rose, has been obsessed with this book since we first read it to her last month. We recently visited a tourist attraction where she saw zebras, flamingos and monkeys -- all of which are featured in the book -- and she screams as we turn each page and she spots those animals. She calls it "Zee-Zaa," as in the Zebra Book, and she carries it around the house with her and asks us to read it 10 times a day.

Democracy's Big Day: The Inauguration of Our President
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (September, 2000)
Author: Jim Bendat
Average review score:

"With wit and wisdom . . ."
With wit and wisdom, Bendat discusses all aspects of Inauguration Day -- from the president-elect's morning coffee with the president, to the afternoon parade, to the evening inaugural galas -- all with an eye toward the historical and hysterical." L.A Times, January 20, 2001.

Great History, Great Fun
This is an excellent book for the historian and the casual reader of American history. The style is relaxed and the content is strong. There is at least a synopsis in anecdotal form of every inauguration in U.S.history. With constant controversy surrounding contemporary presidential elections, this book is genuinely a must read. It captures not just the information, but the actual drama of the inaugurations and peppers that with fascinating tidbits. For example, did you know that Frederick Douglass was at Lincoln's second inauguration reception? Or that Franklin Pierce had no lights, no dishes and no bedroom of his own, the first night of his White House stay?

This book is worthy of more than one read and endless "pick-it-up-when-you-get-a-second" reads! Very good, very cool book. Both for someone wanting something interesting to read and for an addition to a historian's library. Here's hoping that Mr. Bendat writes more!

Inauguration Celebration
This book is filled with fascinating details about every presidential inauguration in United States history. Most people probably have not given a great deal of thought to inaugurations, but writer Jim Bendat opens the door to a series of intriguing, and sometimes important, details. For example, Abraham Lincoln was the first president to invite a free African American to attend an inauguration. Lyndon Johnson was the first president to be sworn in by a woman.

This engaging book provides us with an insight into a wealth of little known facts about American history. Anyone interested in history (or trivia, though there is much more to it than trivia) will be delighted by this book.

The writing is lively and spirited. The subject matter is unforgettable. The book is terrific.

Disney Days 2002 Day-To-Day Calendar
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (15 July, 2001)
Author: Andrews McMeel Publishing
Average review score:

Need it to start my day!!
I love to have my coffee and my quiet time, and flip the next page of the calender over to see what new picture is for the day. It may sound foolish but I have had disney calenders on my desk for years and look forward to reading each one. I havent noticed repeats for there shouldn't be with so many different movies but I like to see if my favorites come up for the day. I think it is also just a daily reminder of my youth and brings a smile to my face when I see an old one come up LOL, and I can remember it!!

Do they ever disappoint?
Disney Days Calendar 2001 upholds the standard of excellence established by those of previous years. Anyone who loves Disney will love having a beautiful new image to look at each day. The pictures are wonderful to use for making homemade cards or postcards, and with some double-sided tape, the little black and white flip-animation pictures on the bottom-right can be turned into cute sealing stickers for the backs of envelopes. Enjoy!

Gorgeous!
Sigh...if only they made a calendar for people like me who like the Disney animated features but not the short cartoons, life would be perfect. :) Just kidding, but it would be closer. Still, this is a beautiful calendar, and you can cut the prettiest pictures out after you're done with them and put them up somewhere nice! ESPECIALLY not to be missed if you're a fan of Sleeping Beauty, but if you're looking for Hercules shots, you'll be puzzled by the complete absence of Megara in this calendar.

Dog Days: Rhymes Around the Year
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (August, 1999)
Authors: Jack Prelutsky and Dyanna Wolcott
Average review score:

A Delight For All Readers
This is a delightful collection of poems written from the perspective of the canine that speaks to the uniqueness of each month. The language as well as illustrations will captivate and hold the interest of child as well as adult. I have shared this with my son's kindergarten teacher, who agreed it is a gem!

Sweet , original book for children and dog lovers alike.
What a wonderful little book. While the rhyme of Mr. Prelutsky is always fresh and fine, it was the illustrations that captured my mind. Dyanna Wolcott has a wonderful eye for the child like experience. She captures the world of dogs with a fanciful blend of humor, originality and blazing color. As a book of months this is a wonderful teaching tool. But I found it a special book for dog lovers too. I gave a copy to my daughter as a gift. She's 42!

A charming children's book that even adults will love
I am still giggling at the original rhymes perfectly paired with imaginative illustrations in this terrific book for young kids that parents will enjoy reading to them time and again. I can't get over the clever, exquisite art work that call to mind works of Mattisse and Chagal.

Dorothy Day: Selected Writings
Published in Paperback by Orbis Books (September, 1992)
Authors: Robert Ellsberg and Dorothy Day
Average review score:

Dorothy Day in her own words
Dorothy Day's life and writings challenge Christians to remember and serve the least among us. This selection of writings highlights a broad range of social, political and religious topics. In her time, Ms. Day's activism brought about much criticism and opposition. Today many remember her as America's Mother Teresa. Her purpose was to keep the Gospel alive through the challenge of service. Her voice continues to shine in the pages of this excellent collection. If you are interested in a call to social justice Dorothy Day's writings will be a source of continued inspiration.

Great!
This was the first book by Dorothy Day that I ever read and now I have just finished it for the second time. It's fabulous! Informative and inspirational. I found my faith strengthened by reading this book. I highly recommend it for all.

A call to radical Christianity
A collection of Day's writing, it's a fascinating read, and one would hope a call to conversion for those who fail to see Christ in all around them, especially in the poor. Remember, we are told not to judge and to give freely to all who ask. Think about that the next time you're approached by a panhandler.
